I remember seeing a small menu after completion of GIF capture using ShareX - and one of the options of that menu allowed me to open the gif in a gif editor. The scrolling capture just scrolls whatever you are using, captures an image, and "guesses" what the output shold be. This is what it looks like when you press ALT+F Example image on my C:/windows folder or Example image: reddit post It doesn't work perfectly though but there's no other software that does this. Its also more effective than chrome plugins because you can capture client-side things like large folder structures. This function completely replaces chrome plugin like full page screen capture. Using the ALT+F command outlined in Īnything that can be scrolled using your middle scroll wheel like this:īenefits from using scrolling. Or capturing something that doesn't fit all on one page. Here, you can view the other functions you can. Open ShareX by searching for it on your computer. You can select the region you want to capture, a. 1/5/2024 0 Comments Map of the pacific northwestEach line represents the average storm track for that year, and lines are grouped based on what regions they left especially dry or wet. These are some of the storm tracks produced by Wise and Dannenberg’s study. And using other paleoclimate records-such as coral skeletons from the Pacific or ice cores from the Andes-they could augment their local tree ring data with knowledge of when a broader El Niño or La Niña event was convulsing the Pacific. They estimated years of storm tracks from the additional 275 years of data in the tree rings. Using the correlations observed from those 50 years of known meteorological data matched to tree rings, they were able to back-track. This is when low-pressure storms tumble out of the Pacific, delivering Oregon and Washington most of their annual rainfall.) (They also focused their analysis on storm tracks measured during the October to March rainy period. By matching this data to the geocoded tree rings, Wise and Dannenberg could learn what kinds of storms soak a certain valley and what kinds leave them dry. People have been recording storm tracks in the region since the 1950s. Then, the authors collated this tree-ring data with the past 50 years of observational measurements for the region. They also merged this new data with a broader, older library of tree-ring chronologies recorded across the Pacific Northwest. Every ring in this mean tree is associated with a year, and researchers can tell whether the year was wet or dry, depending on the thickness of the ring. Once enough samples have been collected per stand, then a kind of average tree ring history emerges for the site. From each stand, she or her colleagues would sample 25 or 30 different trees, taking two cores per tree. Six years ago, Wise began going out in the field, collecting data from dozens of stands of trees across the Pacific Northwest. Like many other trees, too, ponderosa pines mark wetter years-which often boost their growth-as a thicker splotch. Every year, like all trees, a pine inscribes the outside perimeter of its bark into its heartwood as a ring. They form stands in valleys, on ridge lines, and on the lee sides of mountains. Ponderosa pines are nestled across this crucial region. But if they come at a slight angle, there’s less of a shadow, and the eastern side is a little bit wetter compared to the west side.” “If storms come west to east, there’s a big rain shadow. How so? “The storm track really affects the water on the eastern side of the Cascades,” says Wise. All three create and respond to the annual storm track: the average of all the paths taken by winter storms within a year. The paper relies on the relationship between the Cascades, the Pacific, and thousands of ponderosa pines. And ponderosa pines scattered across the two states absorb the moisture, thriving in wet years and adding thin growth layers in dry years. The direction of a storm’s path makes a big difference in the precipitation each valley and ridge in the region receives. From every October to March, storms roll in from the Pacific and break across the Cascades mountain range in Washington and Oregon. Their finding will resonate beyond the Cascades: Because that region is so important to how moisture enters and fans across North America, the study helps answer important questions about how climate change will roil the United States.Īt the center of the paper is an especially sensitive species nestled across an especially ecologically diverse region. In a paper published this month in Science Advances, Erika Wise and Matthew Dannenberg, both paleoclimatologists at the University of North Carolina, teased three centuries of local climate history out of the ponderosa pine trees that dot the Pacific Northwest. Now, two scientists may have found a way to track a storm-or, at least, track the average of all storms across the season-325 years in the past. A weather historian can track a storm from a century ago using records-watching it crawl across the plains through the precipitation totals of yellowed farm journals and log books. A meteorologist can track a storm today using satellite or pulse-Doppler radar data. Our anti-malware engine filter applications and classifies them according to our parameters. The real worry is the long-term support, which is highly valuable for a product that’s going to be part of your home for years to come. For low-key users, WiZ has an ample feature set that should meet day-to-day demands. Partnerships with Spotify for music sync and a strong play in TV backlighting give Hue the edge over WiZ, but these are fairly advanced features that aren’t necessarily a big selling point for everyone. Some of those animation features in Hue Pro are baked right into the WiZ app. That said, the native WiZ app has some unique features out of the box, such as energy consumption tracking and setting transition interval times. Third-party support is a little stronger for Hue, with apps like Hue Pro providing animation capabilities beyond the Philips app. Both can activate with commands through Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Siri. Setting up schedules, room organization, and color recipes are on par. The color and brightness range across brands is equally broad. Hue has a few more bulb form factors by way of finished lamps. Standard E12, E26, and GU10 sockets are available for both. Function WiZįunctionally, Philips Hue and WiZ are similar. Let’s compare these two platforms and figure out which is best for you. The WiZ mobile app is also different than Hue’s, offering more functions in some areas and fewer in others. That’s one less hoop to jump through than Philips Hue, making setup and expansion a bit easier. If you’ve ever set up a Chromecast, it’s the same idea. During setup, they produce their own little Wi-Fi hotspot that you connect to, if only to relay the credentials for your home Wi-Fi network. Instead, WiZ smart bulbs connect directly to your router over Wi-Fi. Though the Bluetooth range is basically limited to within the same room as you, this can save the bit of time it takes to connect to the hub via Wi-Fi. Since its launch, Hue has added Bluetooth to its bulbs, so the hub isn’t strictly necessary. The internet connection also allows for remote connectivity, so lights can turn off automatically as you leave the house, for example. This hub connects to a Wi-Fi router, which in turn connects to your phone. Zigbee devices run on a different frequency than Wi-Fi and require their own physical hub. Hue uses a wireless standard called Zigbee, which has been around for a while as a means for low-power connections. Detailed instruction is available on tig’s website. Which is why there is something called the Italian spelling alphabet, or Italian phonetic alphabet. “S as in Sam,” I say, followed by, “P as in Paula.” In Italian, though, “Sam” and “Paula” won’t cut it. My last name is such that I have to spell it out over the phone all the time at home. Once you’ve managed to convince the person on the other end of the line that you really, really need them to speak more slowly, the next hurdle is one you’re probably not prepared for: Spelling. Having said all of that, sometimes travelers in Italy – including me – find it necessary to get on the phone. Some of it is physical, since Italians speak with their entire bodies, but most of it is due to just how rapidly Italians talk. It’s not even that I rely on reading lips – I’m certainly not staring at the driver’s face when I’m in the back seat of the cab. I will happily start a conversation with my taxi driver just to keep the linguistic gears in my brain oiled, but I will do almost anything to avoid making or receiving a phone call in Italian. The overwhelmingly positive responses always seem out of whack with my meager attempts at speaking Italian, but it sure is a confidence boost that keeps me coming back for more.Įxcept, that is, when it comes to talking on the phone. Getting a short – but coherent – sentence out to a taxi driver or shop keeper sometimes means getting praised as if you’ve just recited Dante from memory. One of the things I love most about traveling in Italy is how gracious Italians are when you fumble through a few words of their language. Although the two shared credit with Garcia on ‘Cumberland Blues’ and ‘St. Since he was the in-house lyric writer, Hunter was the one Lesh approached with his new tune. When Weir made substantial changes to ‘One More Saturday Night,’ Hunter had had enough and asked John Perry Barlow, Weir’s friend from boarding school, to officially take over as Weir’s lyricist. Weir’s and Hunter’s relationship was volatile, due to the former’s penchant for changing and flubbing the latter’s carefully composed lyrics. Already friendly with the members, Hunter could adapt specific phrases and vocal styles to each members strengths, composing the jaunty ‘Operator’ for Ron ‘Pigpen’ McKernan and indulging Weir’s cowboy rock and roll persona on ‘Sugar Magnolia’ and ‘Truckin’. His contributions were so prominent that he was listed as an official member in the album’s credits. The insider status that Hunter already had made him an invaluable asset to the Dead camp, and his major stand as the group’s sole lyricist was on American Beauty. Seeing a role that needed to be filled within the band, Garcia extended an invitation to Hunter to join the Grateful Dead family. A poet and fiction writer, Hunter had sent his old friend Garcia a series of writings that eventually became the lyrics to ‘Alligator’, ‘St. Hunter was a voracious reader and a highly attuned intellectual who also happened to share the band’s inclination towards psychedelic drugs. Enter Robert Hunter, Garcia’s old beatnik buddy who played in the initial bluegrass and jug band outfits that Garcia led. 1/4/2024 0 Comments Qupzilla sniWhen the Package Configuration Window pops up, drag the !QupZilla to the same directory as !ZillaRAM – you’ll notice it does nothing at this poit, other than sets the place where !QupZilla will be installed: Open PackMan (usually found in Apps on RISC OS 5 machines) and update it.įind QupZilla from the list and Mark to Install And, for me, it can configure Wispy V!ĭownload !ZillaRAM and unzip it to a directory of your choice. But it’s faster, has a “re-clickable” iconbar icon, let’s you know when something is happening via a banner, and even sets the colours correctly. There are still some not quite RISC OS” things, like the menu bar at the top. A more RISC OS QupZilla, albeit via a separate app. However, with a clearer understanding of PackMan’s mechanisms for installing packages, it all works quite well. That said, that may have been more of a misunderstanding of the instructions on my part. The only problem, early on, was that it seemed that some aspects of the SharedLibs were available from PackMan and some from a site linked on the ROOL forum, which felt incredibly messy.īetter use of PackMan tidies this up considerably, but initially it was complicated. With all this in place, the app worked nicely. All automatically, but with an option to force a specific swap-state. Rob used some platform-detection software to allow ZillaRAM to detect the board that it is running on, and sets the colour swap accordingly. There was also the issue of colour swapping – on some machines, red and blue are swapped to be in line with “industry standards” rather than “RISC OS standards” and in vanilla QupZilla, this requires a change to the !Run file. So combining these things should create a usable, automated app – but I still wanted an iconbar icon! I had used AddTinyDir to create one for my application sandwich, but obviously it was on the wrong side of the iconbar. Rob said he thought he could code to check for a RAMDisc and, if not present, set one up or resize it if necessary from an app. QupZilla and Otter-Browser will ONLY work in 16m colour modes. But often the window failed to materialise (what I didn’t realise at the time was that this was due to not being in a 16m colour mode. I’d used !Liquidise from Liquid Silicon to create a banner before running the necessary files so I knew that something was happening. However, the pause while it loaded often looked like the computer had crashed because it was a good few seconds of nothing happening. Killing QupZilla on closing, thank’s to Steve Fryatt’s TaskKillĪnd, to my mind (though not “scientifically” proven), there was a worthwhile difference in loading speed.Run !QupZilla, using the support files in the RAMDisc.Using my application sandwich, if a RAMDisc was previously set up (even from Configure on Boot), I had just about managed to: What I had struggled to do with my complicated version was do some of the automation: My colleague, Rob, suggested that one streamlining possibility was to leave !Qupzilla outside of our !ZillaRAM app – as long as it had been seen by the filer, it would load fairly quickly anyway. This was then copied to a RAMDisc on the machine (the amount of memory available these days means RAMDiscs are easy to utilise) along with the supporting files that are needed.Īfter a bit of experimentation, I realised that the browser itself didn’t need to be run from the RAM Disc to achieve a noticeable speed increase, as long as the Unix support files were located there. One of the things I’d done was to embed !Qupzilla deep in my application sandwich. In discussions online with another RISC OS user who had infinitely better coding skills than me, we thought that he could make some streamlined changes to the multi-layered way I’d originally achieved what I’d wanted for myself – but also a useful RISC OS browser for configuring Wispy V. And it might have been a good start for someone to take a hold of it, modify it and make it so much better! This “application sandwich” was primarily due to a distinct lack of coding skills. It wasn’t neat, tidy, or clever, but it was functional. QupZilla, as ported to RISC OS by Chris Gransden, is a nice browser for RISC OS, but it lacks a few of the basics that RISC OS users have come to expect: an iconbar icon some indicator of it doing something during the long pause when loading and a little bit more speed! Even as is, it still feels faster than Otter.īeing frustrated by many of these shortfalls, it wasn’t impossible, even for me, to cludge something together that manages all this. |
